A new type of eye bank has been created on the basis of the M. F. Vladimirsky Clinic in the Moscow region, integrated into the regional organ and tissue donation system. This allows you to build a full cycle of work with donor material — from identifying a donor to carrying out a transplant, the press service of the Ministry of Health of the Moscow region reports.
"The creation of an eye bank is an important step in the development of the transplant service in the Moscow region. Until recently, patients with corneal diseases had to wait for a referral to the federal center. Now the Moscow region is meeting this need on its own, and the path from the donor to the operation runs within the region. And for patients who need a corneal transplant, this help will be more accessible, and waiting times will be shortened," said Lyudmila Bolataeva, Vice Governor of the Moscow Region.
Unlike classical models, where the processes of fabric harvesting and their use are separate, in the Moscow region they are combined into a single system. The surgical coordination center for donation and transplantation plays a key role, ensuring timely identification of donors and tissue sampling. Today, 37 medical organizations in the region are involved in this work.
The integration of the eye bank allows you to use your own donor resource, minimize the time from removal to preservation of tissues and ensure quality control at all stages.
Corneal transplant operations are performed in MONICA. Previously, patients were referred to federal centers, but today the region fully provides this type of medical care on its own. On average, about 150 people need corneal transplants every year in the Moscow region.
