Rostec United Engine Corporation has developed a 400 kW turbogenerator based on an engine for VK-650V light class helicopters. The new product has no analogues in Russia in terms of power to weight ratio. In the future, the turbo generator is planned to be used as part of hybrid aircraft, including those intended for operation in the northern regions.
The UEC presented the development for the first time at the Arctic — Regions forum. The turbogenerator was created at the ODK-Klimov enterprise. It has a power of 400 kW and a weight of 200 kg.
"The new turbo generator based on the VK-650V aircraft engine is a successful continuation of the UEC's work to expand the range of power plants for various types of aircraft. It implements effective design solutions that ensure high reliability. A six-phase oscillator is used, which guarantees the possibility of continuing operation in the event of a failure of one phase. The ability to operate at low temperatures allows it to be used in difficult climatic conditions, including in the Arctic regions," said Evgeny Prodanov, General Designer of the St. Petersburg—based ODK-Klimov enterprise.
The VK-650V engine has been modified for the new product. His gear ratio has been changed. Thanks to the design solutions, the generator has received high specific power values. Electricity is generated by a high-speed rotor rotating at a frequency of tens of thousands of revolutions per minute. The conversion of alternating current to direct current with the required voltage level is provided by the power electronics unit.
The turbo generator allows you to create a hybrid power plant. Among the advantages of the turbo generator are low weight and high resource performance. It is planned that the resource of the gas turbine drive will be at least 4.5 thousand hours for the main parts of the hot part and 9 thousand hours for the main parts of the cold part, the resource of the generator will be at least 10 thousand hours.
The reliable operation of the unit is ensured by the liquid cooling system of the generator and the power electronics unit.
The III Arctic—Regions Forum is being held in Arkhangelsk from July 31 to August 1, 2025. The main topic is the key directions of development of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation.
