The American payment corporation Mastercard Inc. has entered into an agreement to acquire the British fintech startup BVNK to develop infrastructure for stablecoins. This is reported in the Mastercard press release.
The value of the transaction is $1.8 billion with the payment of an additional $300 million, provided that BVNK meets the stipulated financial and operational targets.
The deal aims to integrate blockchain solutions with traditional payment systems amid growing demand from banks and fintech services for transactions with stablecoins and tokenized deposits. Traditional payment systems such as Mastercard and Visa Inc. strive to maintain their positions, taking into account the development of new technologies.
The transaction is expected to be completed at the end of 2026, subject to obtaining the necessary regulatory approvals. Since the beginning of 2026, Mastercard's market capitalization has decreased by 11% to $453.5 billion.
Previously, the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global Inc. showed interest in acquiring BVNK, but both sides refused to continue negotiations due to disagreements regarding the terms of the $2 billion deal.
In early March, Mastercard announced the creation of a global partner network with the participation of more than 85 companies in the field of digital assets and other organizations related to cryptocurrencies, with the aim of reducing the gap between non-traditional and traditional payment methods. In 2025, the volume of payments in digital currency amounted to at least $350 billion.
Mastercard Inc. is a multinational financial corporation and payment system. The company offers a wide range of payment transaction processing and related payment services between merchants' banks and card-issuing banks or buyers' credit unions that use Mastercard debit, credit and prepaid cards to make purchases. The headquarters is located in Purchase, New York.
BVNK is a fintech startup developing infrastructure solutions for stablecoins (cryptocurrencies linked to fiat money). BVNK aims to simplify digital finance by integrating with current business operations. The headquarters is located in London (UK) with offices in 130 countries.
