The Danish shipping company A.P. Moller–Maersk, through its subsidiary APM Terminals, acquired 37.5% of shares in the South Container Terminal of the Saudi port of Jeddah (Jeddah Islamic Port). This is reported in a press release from Maersk.

The deal is in line with Maersk's long-term commitment to logistics development in Saudi Arabia and confirms the growing strategic importance of the Red Sea and the port of Jeddah to Maersk's global logistics network.

Maersk aims to integrate South Container Terminal into the company's operating ecosystem to increase container shipping capacity, expand direct services, and improve maritime connectivity to gain deeper vertical control over key seaports.

In addition, the deal demonstrates the transnational cooperation between shipping operators as part of the implementation of the program to diversify the economy of Saudi Arabia until 2030. The Saudi Vision 2030 program prioritizes logistics as the main factor in strengthening Saudi Arabia's position in the global supply chain connecting Asia, Europe and Africa.

The Red Sea remains one of the most important maritime corridors connecting the Indian Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal, which provides between 10% and 15% of global trade, underscoring the critical importance of port infrastructure along the coastline for global supply chains.

Jeddah Islamic Port is the largest port on the Red Sea coast and has 62 multifunctional berths for import and export from Saudi Arabia. The South Container Terminal has five modern berths with a capacity of 4.1 million TEU.

By strengthening Maersk's presence in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia expects to manage a greater share of regional trade flows by investing heavily in port upgrades and logistics infrastructure.

A.P. Moller–Maersk is a Danish company in the field of marine transportation, offshore drilling, energy and retail trade. The company includes divisions Ocean (Global Container Shipping), Logistics& Services, Terminals&Towage and Manufacturing&Others. The headquarters is located in Copenhagen (Denmark).
