The German automobile concern Volkswagen Group and the American Qualcomm Technologies have signed a long-term cooperation agreement starting in 2027. This is reported in a Volkswagen press release.

Under the agreement, Qualcomm Technologies will become a key supplier of high-performance systems on chips (SoCs) for next-generation infotainment platforms, communications, and software-defined vehicles (SDVs). The companies plan to integrate Snapdragon 5G Modem RF and V2X technologies into SDV-based vehicles to provide ultrafast connectivity and real-time communication.

Volkswagen is currently developing its SDV architecture in collaboration with American electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian as part of a joint venture between Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies. It is planned that the architecture will debut in 2025 in the Rivian R2 model, and the first Volkswagen car based on this system will appear in 2027 in the production version of the ID.EVERY1 concept.

The partnership aims to increase efficiency, stability and predictability in the supply chain, as well as strengthen opportunities in the development of key technological areas. As part of the collaboration, Volkswagen plans to introduce Qualcomm's Snapdragon Digital Chassis technology, including Snapdragon single-chip infotainment systems, Snapdragon 5G modem radio frequency, and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2X) communications solutions.

The agreement complies with the terms of cooperation within the Automated Driving Alliance (a joint initiative of Volkswagen's Cariad software development division and supplier Bosch). This program uses Qualcomm Snapdragon Ride platforms to develop scalable AI-based systems for self-driving.

For Qualcomm, the agreement with Volkswagen was the second major automotive project in Germany after the conclusion of a partnership with ZF. The deals reflect the growing demand among automakers for integrated semiconductor and software solutions for cars.
