Yandex.Translate has a new mode specifically for working with complex or very long texts. It uses large language models (LLM), which analyze the context better in order to preserve the style of the original and ensure the accuracy of the translation.
The advantages of the new mode are noticeable in situations where it is critically important to take into account the general meaning of the text for translation accuracy. For example, in a review of the film Me Before You, machine translation, which holds the context worse, can produce the literal "I am in front of you", working with the title as a separate phrase. In the new mode, the Translator analyzes the general meaning and chooses an idiomatic option — "See you later."
The service uses the same principle to work with stable expressions. For example, the phrase It is a truth universally recognized, without taking into account the context, can be translated into the form of a cumbersome construction "The generally accepted truth is that ...". In the new mode, the service understands the structure and style of the phrase — and gives a natural translation of "Everyone knows that ...", preserving the meaning without formalism.
To ensure that the quality of the translation has improved, Yandex has engaged linguistic experts. According to their estimates, translations using large language models on complex texts are significantly better in 80% of cases than using classical machine translation models.
Depending on the tasks, users can choose the mode at any time. Yandex. Translate — new or classic. This can be done in one click — right under the text input field. For complex texts, where maximum accuracy and naturalness of speech are important, the new AI Translator mode is suitable. It takes a little longer to translate than in the classic mode, because the model performs a more thorough context analysis. For typical unambiguous phrases and simple texts, you can select the classic mode in which translation is instantaneous.
AI mode is already available on the Yandex Translator website and app for the main European languages: English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. In the new mode, you can translate from these languages to Russian and back. In order for everyone to use the AI Translator, there are limits on the number of requests per day.
