Specialists of the Vilyuisk Geological Exploration Expedition (VGRE) of ALROSA are conducting exploration work to extract titanium as an associated mineral from the kimberlite ore of the Udachnaya and Zarnitsa pipes. This is stated in the company's message.
If the economic feasibility of obtaining titanium concentrate is achieved, the diamond mining company will consider the possibility of organizing its supply to the non-ferrous metallurgy of Russia.
A study of the Udachnaya kimberlite ore revealed an average titanium content of 0.8 kg per ton of rock. Thus, the annual volume of metal production in concentrate at the facilities of factory No. 12 of Udachninsky GOK ALROSA can reach up to 6 thousand tons.
The presence of titanium in the kimberlite pipes of Western Yakutia was discovered back in the 60s of the last century - the main titanium–containing mineral is picroilmenite. At that time, due to diamond mining as the main task and the insufficient level of technology for processing kimberlite ores, titanium extraction was not carried out. Today, the rock accumulated over several decades of diamond mining, including titanium, is contained in the tailings dumps of the Udachninsky Mining and Processing Complex of ALROSA.
Vilyuyskaya GE prepared a draft exploration work for associated valuable elements of the Udachnaya tube and received a positive expert opinion from the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution Rosgeolexpertiza. Upon successful completion of the research, the processes of kimberlite ore enrichment at factory No. 12 will be expanded due to technological links for the associated extraction of titanium concentrate.
