In 2026, Russian grocery retail will continue to develop new formats with an emphasis on hard discounters and convenience stores. The increase in the number of points will be caused by an increased demand for rationality and compactness. The omnichannel model will become the standard, integrating with ecosystems (fintech, logistics) and a focus on personalization through the introduction of AI data analytics tools. Such conclusions are contained in the published annual report X5.

In 2025, retail sales in Russia exceeded 60 trillion rubles for the first time (55.8 trillion rubles in 2024). According to the results of the reporting year, the volume of the grocery retail market in Russia amounted to 29.6 trillion rubles. The dynamics of changes in the volume structure of the food retail market has preserved the key trends of previous years. The online grocery retail segment grew the most actively. Hard discounter formats and specialty stores have also increased their market share, and convenience stores continue to hold strong positions.

The Russian grocery retail industry notes the rapid growth of the ready-to-eat category. The main consumers are young people and single residents of large cities: they prefer to save time and choose ready-made solutions instead of cooking at home. To meet the growing demand, large retail chains are expanding the range of such products and reorganizing the retail space, adding bakeries and cafe points to the stores.

The report pays special attention to the shortage of workers in the industry. There is a shortage of personnel both in mass positions related to physical labor (salesmen, order pickers, culinary workers) and in highly specialized roles, the need for which has increased due to the active digital transformation of the industry. Under the current conditions, the role of the employer's internal corporate culture and non-material motivation of staff has increased in the industry. In addition to competitive salaries for employees, federal retail chains have flexible or hybrid schedules. At the same time, the shortage of labor is stimulating the digital transformation of the industry. The active introduction of automation and robotics tools into business processes is aimed at compensating for staff shortages and in the long term may lead to a structural decrease in personnel demand in the sector.
