Swedish Sivers Semiconductors AB intends to invest $30 million in expanding photonics production in Glasgow, Scotland, taking into account the growing demand from data centers for AI and optical networks. This is reported in the Sivers press release.
As part of the project, Sivers expects to increase production capacity to 100 million lasers with distributed feedback and continuous generation per year. The plant, which produces lasers based on indium phosphide, is scheduled to be commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2027.
The investment confirms Sivers' transition from the Fab-Lite production model to a so-called hybrid approach combining production expansion with the involvement of external casting and manufacturing partners in Asia.
From the point of view of Sivers, indium phosphide lasers and semiconductor optical amplifiers will be crucial to ensure high-performance and energy-efficient optical communication. Hyperscale operators creating large clusters for AI with the transition to high-speed network architectures are increasing the demand for advanced optical interconnect technologies.
Sivers Semiconductors is a Swedish semiconductor manufacturer with headquarters in Kist (Sweden). The company develops technologies for laser and radio frequency photonic devices for data centers, satellite communications, defense and telecommunications industries.
